The End of the World

When we think of travel we should never limit ourselves. We can dream and include many things in this dream. We can decide to see Europe or America. If you live in those countries you can decide to visit Africa, China, and Russia and even go to Afghanistan. You can go and climb the highest mountain, swim in the Dead Sea or visit the Pyramids in Egypt. The world turns and so there is a never ending daylight you can follow. Following your dream can also take you to the end of the world.

Poles

The world is round so we could make a fictional beginning which will mean the beginning is exactly where the end is. That does not sound right so let us use something else. A mystical place where you start and where you can end somewhere else. The North and South Poles make up two distinct points that are separate and that can ultimately be described as to the end of the world. Interesting fact is that at the Poles you only have one direction. Either South or North depending which one you are at.

North Pole

If you live in the south of the globe the North Pole may be your end. A mystical place with Eskimos and massive white bears. Today we know this imaginary point is in the sea and you can not put rocks or flags on the spot. It will drift south in minutes. Your best option to is to take a Russian ice breaker to take you to the pole. You can walk or take an airplane but they might not be good options. The plane will leave you without joy and walking there will take months, even years if you strike bad weather.

South Pole

While the early explorers found a desolated place without any people you will find scientists living there today. Basically on the South Pole where Scott found out he had lost the race against Amundsen you will find the Amundsen/Scott base. At least you could leave a few rocks there and it will still be there a year later. The best way to see the South Pole would be to leave from South America , Chile, Argentina and Australia. You can fly, there but the most rewarding would certainly be to take a boat.

So maybe there is no end to this world because if you reach either of the Poles you will only find a flat piece of land or sea heading away from you. But if you can imagine an end to the world you can go there. To reach this might be an expensive trip, but certainly worthwhile. We all want to travel Europe on a cheap budget these days.

Budget and discount price airlines have sprung up in almost every European country in the last few years all of them fighting furiously with each other to offer the best value cheap airfare deals. But do we really benefit from these discount European travel prices or do the drawbacks of trying to travel Europe cheaply outweigh the advantages? Do the budget low price airfares blind us to the extra hassle that the cheap price might be hiding? Lets look at some current cheap European travel deals and see what we find.

Almost every European country now has at least one no frills budget airline. Easy Jet and Ryan Air are becoming well known and popular in Great Britain and in Ireland. Germany has four or five low cost airlines and cheap airfare specialists. Meanwhile, in Sweden, SAS have just launched their own budget offshoot called Snowflake.

At first glance the fares that these airlines charge can seem ridiculously low; Ryan Air have given their flights away almost for free in the past although you still have to pay the airport tax of around twenty UK pounds. But wheres the catch? Is there a catch? Can you really travel Europe by air without spending a fortune?

Heres the deal if you want to travel Europe on a cheap budget:

Firstly, the low fares airlines in Europe nearly always use out of town provincial airports often about forty or fifty miles from the respective city centres. This can add up to two hours of travel time to your journey at each end. You also have to pay for the bus or train connection to get from your airport to the city centre. Make sure you add this price in to the cost of your ticket when comparing prices between cheap airfare deals and the prices charged by the mainstream airlines. In most cases the main airlines fly you into the city centre airport and thus cut your travel time and the cost of any extra transport.

If youre unlucky enough to miss a flight then you could literally be stuck in a very rural airport overnight with all the food outlets closed down and no way to get back to the town or the city.

Secondly, you only get what you pay for. The European budget airlines may offer no in-flight service for food and drinks. Or, if they do, they will charge you for it at a premium rate. Coffee, sandwiches and beer may be very pricey indeed. To be fair, many of the flights are only of an hour or twos duration so snacks and drinks may not be such a big deal.

Thirdly figure out the total travel time and compare that to the costs. For example: it takes five hours to go from the very centre of Glasgow in Scotland to the very centre of London by train and it costs around twenty five UK pounds each way.

Now you might pick up a cheap flight from Glasgow to London, only to find that both of your airports are forty miles from the city centre. That immediately adds three hours to your travel time, not counting the waiting around at the airports, baggage handling and all the extra hassle that goes with it. You will also have to pay separately for the bus or train journey from airport to city centre and vice versa. Unless your airfare is extremely cheap you might well spend more money in the long run for a less comfortable journey. Check it all out carefully in advance if you can.

Fourthly, the quoted cheap airfare ticket prices are only for APEX travellers. You might have to pay a lot extra if you need to change your flight time. Cheap airfare prices are also usually only available if you buy well in advance buying the day before or on the day will add a big premium to the price. The baggage allowance is also on the mean side often no more than 15kg or 20kg per person. Any more than that and you will face a very hefty premium on your cheap price ticket.

In summary you can travel Europe cheaply by choosing your discount airline package carefully. But do try to weigh up all the extra hidden costs as you compare flight ticket prices. You should also factor in the extra travel time that arriving at a provincial airport may bring.

However, if youre more interested in the scenic beauty than the aggressive plunge of the water, there are a few flat water canoeing routes you can check out. The Palmiet River runs through the dazzling Kogelberg nature reserve and only takes you over one or two mild rapids. Canoeing in the lakes of the Garden Route is equally delightful; taking you on a scenic journey to an idyllic overnight spot.

Dare to do some Downhill Mountain-Biking

When it comes to downhill mountain-biking, thrill seekers are spoilt for choice as there are so many fun and interesting trails already explored and many waiting to be uncovered. The Cape has some great single-track routes that take you through the exquisite pine plantations or alternatively you could book an escorted trip around the Cape Winelands. Another notable route is found in the De Hoop National Park, which lies close to Swellendam, featuring mountain trails ranging from easiest to most hardcore. For the experts, visit the Free State for a bit of a challenge.

Snowboarding in Africa

One would think that Africa, with her eternal blue skies and beautiful climate, is not really the first destination youd choose to go snowboarding or skiing, since the vast majority of the population has never even seen real snow before. And thats actually a fact. Our equivalent of snowboarding is sand-boarding, which requires double the amount of protective gear for obvious reasons. The locals know of one dedicated ski resort in the Drakensberg and even though the supply of self-produced snow is limited, thats where they go to for a challenge, and to fall about on the fluffy white cold stuff. The more acclaimed ski resort of Africa is Tiffendel in Morocco which boasts a 600m ski run, but even this ski run is only covered in snow for three months of the year. Qualified instructors are on call to assist, so head to Tiffendell Ski Resort to do something different this winter.

Paragliding Paradise

The coastline is littered with popular spots for paragliding and hang-gliding in Africa. The obvious reason being that the closer to the ocean you fly the cooler it will be when soaring a thousand miles up into the air. Paragliding in the arid, dry regions is not impossible but the heat might just be a bit much for you. The coast also offers incredible ridge soaring and a picturesque views of the coastal cities, and when you land you can stop off at a beachfront bar for sundowners. The Garden Route offers a different type of paragliding experience; you can glide across the ocean and admire the playful dolphins and whales underneath you.

Karoo Biking for kicks

Africa is one of the very few destinations which boasts such diversity of superb mountain ranges, sun-streaked sandy deserts, lush forests, fruit-filled valleys and an untainted coastline. What better way to see all of Africas beauty than on two motorised wheels? Karoo biking is originally aimed at UK, US and German international visitors but each year the number of local bikers are increasing. America is one of the most amazing countries in the entire world, and is no doubt one of the most interesting and best places to go travelling. Because of the recession (that has hit the USA particularly bad) it has never been a better time to go travelling there and to experience the sights and sounds of the great nation of liberty. The recession has lead to a decrease in tourism, and this decrease in demand has lead to tourist spots and everything tourism-related to lower their prices (such as bed-and-breakfasts’) meaning you can now stay in places for less than ever.

Because of the size of the country, there are so many different things to see, as each state is almost like its own self-contained culture. For example, you have the gambling capital of the world in Las Vegas, the salt flats of Utah, the Southern country life of Alabama, the hustle and bustle city life of New York and the movie star town of Los Angeles. These are just a few examples of different cultures within the 52 states, and there are plenty more that I haven’t mentioned.

When I was travelling America last year, the thing that I liked most was how easy it was to travel long distances, and the quality of the infrastructure. When I travelled through Vietnam it took us 30 hours to drive a mere 200 miles. That’s 6.6 miles an hour! By contrast, it took me only 4 hours to drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas – a journey of equal distance.
